Stronghold Castle: History & Hauntings

Nestled in the rolling hills of Oregon, Illinois, Stronghold Castle is a striking medieval-style fortress with a rich history and whispers of ghostly activity. Built in 1928 by Walter Strong, then publisher of the Chicago Daily News, the castle was designed as a luxurious summer retreat for his family. Inspired by European castles, the structure boasts towers, hidden passageways, and grand halls adorned with ornate woodwork and medieval décor.

After Strong's passing in 1931, the castle changed hands and was eventually purchased by the Presbyterian Church in 1962. Today, it operates as a retreat and conference center, hosting visitors who marvel at its Old World charm—and sometimes report eerie encounters.

Ghostly Legends & Hauntings

Rumors of hauntings at Stronghold Castle have circulated for decades. Some claim to have seen shadowy figures moving through the halls, while others report hearing unexplained whispers, footsteps, and the sound of doors creaking open on their own.

One of the most famous legends involves the "Lady in White," a spectral figure said to roam the grounds, possibly the spirit of a former servant or guest. There are also stories of Walter Strong himself lingering in his beloved retreat, with visitors sensing a presence in his former bedroom. Some staff members have even reported objects mysteriously moving or lights flickering without explanation.

While skeptics chalk it up to the castle’s age and atmospheric design, paranormal enthusiasts believe Stronghold Castle holds secrets waiting to be uncovered. Whether ghostly or not, this historic landmark continues to captivate those who visit, blending history with an air of mystery.

Walter A. Strong: A Spiritual Biography

Walter Ansel Strong (1868–1931) was more than just the influential publisher of the Chicago Daily News—he was a man deeply shaped by faith, philanthropy, and a desire to leave a lasting impact on the world. His life journey, though cut short, was marked by a profound spiritual undercurrent that influenced his personal and professional decisions.

A Man of Faith and Purpose

Raised in a time when faith played a significant role in shaping society, Strong was known for his strong moral compass and commitment to service. He believed that leadership, particularly in journalism, carried a responsibility to uphold truth and integrity. His role at the Chicago Daily News was not merely about business success but about using the power of the press to inform, uplift, and strengthen the moral fabric of the community.

His spiritual convictions extended into his personal life. Strong was a man who valued reflection and solitude, which may have inspired his vision for Stronghold Castle—a place where one could retreat from the chaos of the world and reconnect with deeper truths. The castle, with its medieval-inspired architecture and peaceful surroundings in Oregon, Illinois, was more than just a grand summer home; it was a sanctuary. Some say it was a place where Strong found solace, a retreat where he could meditate and seek clarity in an increasingly fast-paced world.

A Legacy of Giving

Strong’s commitment to faith was evident in his philanthropy. He supported various causes, believing that wealth and influence came with the duty to uplift others. His legacy continued even after his passing in 1931, when Stronghold Castle was eventually acquired by the Presbyterian Church in 1962. This transition aligned with his values, as the castle became a retreat and spiritual refuge for generations of visitors, embodying the spirit of reflection and renewal that Strong himself valued.

A Spirit That Endures

Even after his death, there are those who believe Walter Strong's presence lingers at Stronghold Castle—not in a menacing way, but as a quiet guardian of the place he loved. Visitors report feeling an inexplicable sense of peace within its walls, as though Strong’s spirit continues to watch over his retreat, ensuring it remains a place of inspiration and quiet contemplation.

Walter A. Strong's life was a testament to the idea that power and faith can coexist, that leadership can be guided by integrity, and that one’s spiritual footprint can leave a mark long after they are gone. His story is not just one of journalistic success, but of a man who sought meaning beyond the material world—a seeker whose legacy continues to whisper through the halls of his beloved castle.

Tom Mahl’s book, The Secret Staircase, explores the fascinating hidden passages and secret rooms inside Stronghold Castle in Oregon, Illinois. Designed to resemble a medieval fortress, the castle was built in 1928 by Walter Strong, publisher of the Chicago Daily News. While its grand towers and stone walls impress visitors, it’s the hidden architectural features that add a layer of mystery and intrigue.

The Secret Rooms & Passageways

Mahl’s research uncovers a network of concealed spaces within the castle, designed both for practicality and intrigue. Some of the most fascinating features include:

  • The Secret Staircase Perhaps the most famous hidden element, this narrow, concealed stairway winds through the castle, allowing for stealthy movement between floors. It was likely designed for privacy or for servants to move unnoticed.
  • The Hidden Rooms Several rooms are tucked behind false walls and bookshelves, creating secluded spaces that could have been used for quiet retreats, storage, or even security purposes. Some believe these rooms may have once served as private studies or areas for clandestine meetings.
  • Underground Tunnels Though unconfirmed, rumors persist about tunnels beneath the castle, potentially leading to escape routes or secret storage areas. Some speculate these tunnels could have been used for bootlegging during Prohibition.
  • Disappearing Doors Ingeniously crafted doors are seamlessly built into the walls, giving an illusion of solid stone or paneling when closed.

Theories & Speculations

The purpose of these hidden spaces remains a subject of debate. Were they simply architectural novelties, or did they serve a greater purpose? Some believe Walter Strong, a man of influence, may have used them for private dealings or security. Others think the secret passages reflect his love of history and storytelling, creating a real-life medieval experience.

Whether designed for secrecy, protection, or pure aesthetic charm, the hidden rooms of Stronghold Castle continue to fuel curiosity, adding to the legend of this remarkable Illinois landmark.
